Nowakowski, Marek; Berger, Guido S.; Braun, João A.; Mendes, João; Bonzatto Junior, Luciano; Lima, JoséThe utilization of unmanned vehicles for specialized tasks has gained significant attention in both military and civilian domains. This article explores the application of commercial unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) for reconnaissance purposes, specifically to verify autonomous driving missions assigned to the developed TAERO manned-unmanned vehicle in field operations. The paper introduces the TAERO vehicle, highlighting its functionality and capabilities for unmanned missions. The architecture of the unmanned ground vehicle (UGV) system is discussed taking into consideration the autonomy subsystem and used location data. The limitations associated with terrain and potential obstacles are addressed as well as importance of acquiring accurate terrain information for successful autonomous operation. The solution proposed in our study involves the use of a commercially available UAV applied to the visual tracking of potential targets in an engagement scenario. Details related to flight route planning system, geolocation, target tracking, and data transmission between robotic platforms are discussed and presented in this work. The acquired real-time data plays a crucial role in confirming the mission, making necessary adjustments, or altering the planned route. The UAV platform, known for its maneuverability and operational capabilities, can operate ahead as a reconnaissance element, improving the overall reconnaissance capabilities of the system. Upon completion of the mission, the UAV can return to the base or land on a moving vehicle platform. The authors proposed integration of a UAV that significantly enhances the autonomous mode capabilities of unmanned ground platform, improving operation in unknown environment during special mission.
- An augmented reality intelligent guide for the automotive industryPublication . Pereira, Francisco; Patrício, Manuel; Lopes, Rui Pedro; Leitão, PauloThroughout the 21st century, there has been a rise in interest of increasing inter-connectivity and smart automation in the realms of industrial production, often called the 4th Industrial Revolution. Thus, interest in areas such as virtual, mixed, and augmented reality has increased as new devices and technologies related to these areas are seen as a possible solution to increase Industrial efficiency, create safer work environments for employees, and more effective training. In this project, a HoloLens app was developed, capable of identifying and showing to the user various zones where a specific vehicle in a production line requires checking and in which users have full spatial perception. Each vehicle is composed of several zones and each of these zones is associated with specific stations in a sequential order, so the user will only be able to see the zones associated with the station that is being treated. Using a specific “gesture” users can change the zone’s status in the database to indicate that the zone has been checked. These changes will be visible and the vehicle, stations, and zones will be updated to reflect the modifications. Various scripts in C# and PHP were used to allow modifications to the behaviour of the objects and database in the augmented reality scene through the access to a RESTful service in Unity.
- An insight into the adjustments for changes in costs formula for construction contracts attending real planningPublication .
- Development of a chatbot to support an university institutional websitePublication . Sampaio, Telmo; Oliveira, Pedro Filipe; Matos, PauloCurrently, the institutional website of the Polytechnic Institute of Braganc¸a (IPB) lacks an interactive system that allows users to obtain information quickly and efficiently. With the increase in the use of online services and the preference of students for instant interactions, there is a growing need for tools that facilitate communication and access to information. This work proposes the development of a chatbot to support the IPB website, with the aim of improving user experience and providing quick and accurate answers to their queries. The main objective of this project is to create an inteligente chatbot capable of understanding and responding to a wide range of questions related to IPB. To achieve this, modern natural language processing and machine learning technologies such as Streamlit, Langchain, and OpenAI are used. The system includes an automated Web Scraper to keep information up-to-date, an architecture based on efficient document segmentation, and an administrative back office for monitoring and management. This development represents a significant advance in how users interact with the IPB website, offering a more efficient and accessible communication channel. The chatbot has the potential to reduce the workload of administrative staff while improving user satisfaction by providing accurate and instant answers to their questions.
- Digital innovation in tourism: exploring the potential of chatbotsPublication . Lopes, Isabel Maria; Guarda, Teresa; Oliveira, Pedro; Fernandes, Paula OdeteIn the last decade there has been a substantial increase in references to Artificial Intelligence (AI). AI has entered people’s lives, without them often realizing it. AI is increasingly present in our lives and in our daily lives, from our homes, transport, travel, industry, etc. It is inseparable to talk about AI without talking about chatbots. Therefore, the main objective of this study is to study the potential of chatbots in the tourism industry. For this purpose, a questionnaire was carried out among Higher Education students in Portugal, as it is understood that it is a good universe of study, since these technologies are still more associated with young audiences. On the other hand, also as a result of programs such as Erasmus, these young people travel more and are more aware of the potential of chatbots in tourism. The results of the questionnaire are presented in light of the literature and the responses collected, as well as the limitations of the present study. Future work that may mitigate the limitations of this research work are also presented.
- From likes to comments: tracking interaction trends on social networks to promote cultural eventsPublication . Ferreira, Jessica; Scalabrini, Elaine C.B.; Lopes, Isabel Maria; Pereira, João Paulo; Cardim, SofiaTourism drives the economy through job creation and infrastructure development, while the cultural component, such as gastronomy and historical heritage, enriches the visitor experience and reduces regional disparities. Municipalities use channels like Instagram to promote cultural events and strengthen local identity, reaching a diverse audience and encouraging community and visitor engagement. This study explores interaction trends in event posts on Bragança, Portuguese City Municipality’s Instagram from 2020 to 2023. The aim is to analyse the evolution of metrics such as likes, comments and views over the last four years. Using a quantitative approach, data was collected from Instagram posts using the APIFY platform, followed by an analysis using Python for statistical evaluation to identify correlations and patterns. The main results reveal significant variations in user engagement with different types of events and changes in follower behaviour over time. These findings offer valuable information for social media management and municipal event planning, emphasising the importance of adaptive strategies on digital platforms.
- How Wine Information Seeking and Event Participation Impact Knowledge and Determines the Purchasing Behavior?Publication . Vieira, Elvira Pacheco; Borges, Ana Pinto; Rodrigues, Paula; Ostapenko, Svitlana; Almeida, António Lopes deHow knowledge impacts purchasing behavior is a matter of extensive investigation, but the research on the interplay between the self-reported wine knowledge and information seeking is scarce. Present research contributes to filling the gap within the understanding how self-reported wine knowledge and information seeking impacts wine purchase behavior. Based on the analysis of 1314 valid questionnaires administered to the participant of wine event “Essência do Vinho” held in Porto, Portugal between 23 and 26 of February 2023, partial least squares (PLS) path analytical technique was employed. We confirm that more knowledgeable consumers are less price sensitive and rely more on their knowledge and subsequent appreciation of place of origin of the wine at the moment of purchase. Meanwhile limited wine knowledge is a constraint in wine consumption, as it makes consumers more insecure in making their own choices and relying more on value for money appreciation, price and recommendation factors. We conclude that stimulation of information seeking and participation in the wine events is key in increasing wine expertise that impacts appreciation of the place of origin and subsequent willingness to pay. Thus, promoting awareness and expertise among consumers is the key to increasing competitiveness of the wine sector.
- Innovation and creativity in tourism, business and social sciencesPublication . The findings reveal a resilient yet evolving sector, with a noticeable shift towards corporate consolidation and a decline in sole proprietorships. The study highlights the sector’s sensitivity to economic fluctuations, underscoring the need for strategic planning and policy intervention to support sustained growth and stability. These insights provide valuable guidance for policymakers and industry stakeholders seeking to navigate future economic uncertainties and foster a more robust accommodation and food services sector in Portugal.
- Population dynamics and economic strategies for enhancing industrial heritage: a bibliometric overviewPublication . Scalabrini, Elaine C.B.; Alves, Francisco; Neto, Reginaldo; Garcia, Joaquín; Teixeira, Felipe; Vaz, Roberto; Teixeira, João Paulo; Fernandes, Paula OdeteThis paper presents a bibliometric analysis examining the relationship between population dynamics and economic strategies for valorising industrial heritage based on 260 articles published between 1990 and 2025. The study reveals an exponential increase in publications from 2019 onward, reflecting a growing interest in this subject. The journal Sustainability emerges as the predominant source of publication, underscoring the significance of sustainability within this field. China is identified as the leader in scientific output, followed by Italy and the United States. Key terms identified include “sustainability,” “cultural heritage,” and “heritage preservation,” emphasising the central themes in this area of research. While the bibliometric analysis offers thoughts about research trends, it does have limitations, including its focus solely on articles published in English and the need for more content analysis. Future research should address these gaps to enhance understanding of the intricate relationship between population dynamics, economic development, and the preservation of industrial heritage.
- Profiling the employment and wage features on the portuguese accommodation and food services activities before and after the COVID-19 pandemicPublication . Nunes, AlcinaAccording to the Tourism Agency of the United Nations (UN Tourism), in most regions of the world, women comprise most of the tourism workforce and tend to concentrate on the lowest-paid and lowest-status jobs in tourism. Indeed, literature recognises that tourism is one of the sectors with a feminised labour force. In Portugal, tourism is a crucial sector of the Portuguese economy and contributes significantly to wealth and job creation. This paper analyses the sector's employment and wage characteristics before and after the COVID-19 pandemic, focusing on wage gender disparities. Using data from the National Statistical Office (INE), the study highlights the sector's susceptibility to economic shifts and the exacerbation of existing wage inequalities due to the pandemic. The analysis reveals that while the sector experienced severe job losses and wage declines during the pandemic, there has been a gradual recovery, albeit with persistent gender wage gaps and a high reliance on part-time employment. The findings underscore the need for targeted policy measures to support the sector’s resilience and promote gender equality in the workforce, ensuring a more equitable recovery in the post-pandemic period.
